Seizure of Banned Oxytocin Highlights Illegal Dairy Practices

A joint operation by the police and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uncovered 612 bottles of the banned drug Oxytocin during a raid on a dairy in Ulhasnagar, Thane. The raid took place at the tabela owned by Prakash Wadhwani, who operates a dairy with 55 buffaloes producing over 250 litres of milk daily. The bottles seized were found without any brand or manufacturer details, raising concerns about their origin and use.

FDA inspector Manish Ghotmare emphasized the significance of the seizure due to the prohibition of Oxytocin for regular use in dairy animals. He warned about the health risks posed to both humans and animals from consuming milk produced under the influence of this hormone.

The Central police station's investigating officer, Deva Kobarne, stated that efforts are ongoing to trace the source of the Oxytocin consignment and dismantle the network responsible for its distribution.

Ashok Bhonsle, an Assistant Professor at the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (COVAS) in Udgir, explained that Oxytocin is a hormonal injection that should only be administered with a prescription from a registered veterinary doctor. Its use is supposed to be limited to situations where it is medically necessary for animals. However, some dairy owners in Mumbai and other regions are known to illegally acquire these injections to boost milk production and speed up milk extraction processes.

This incident reflects broader issues in the dairy industry, where the illegal use of hormones for economic gain can potentially compromise public health and animal welfare. Authorities are now focused on preventing such practices by cracking down on illicit networks and ensuring compliance with regulations.
