Santa María Tonantzintla Marks 25 Years of Cheese Fair Tradition
The auxiliary board of Santa María Tonantzintla, located in the municipality of San Andrés Cholula, Puebla, is gearing up to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its traditional Cheese Fair. Scheduled from July 31 to August 2, 2026, the event will take place at the auxiliary presidency esplanade. The official presentation was led by the municipal president, Guadalupe Cuautle Torres, who emphasized the fair's role in preserving community identity and supporting local dairy-producing families.
The government of San Andrés Cholula projects an attendance of more than 12,000 visitors across the three-day event, which is expected to generate a direct economic impact exceeding 3 million pesos. This influx of capital is crucial for invigorating the local economy and enhancing the competitiveness of small and micro dairy processing plants in this region with a strong agro-industrial tradition.
The commercial lineup will feature participation from over 25 local exhibitors, coordinated by the municipal Department of Culture and Tourism, headed by Eva María Toxqui Daniel. Visitors will have direct access to a wide array of artisanal cheeses and genuine dairy products, including fresh cheese, molino cheese, botanero cheese, as well as cream, butter, and yogurt. This direct sales model eliminates intermediaries, maximizing profitability for the primary link in the dairy chain.
In addition to the technical and commercial showcase of dairy foods, the fair will host a rich cultural agenda, including artistic performances, live musical shows, and samples of typical Pueblan cuisine. This synergy between cultural tourism and gastronomic heritage aims to position the auxiliary board as a tourist attraction in the state of Puebla, drawing in new consumer profiles who value the geographic origin of their food.
Reaching a quarter-century milestone underscores the resilience and perseverance of Tonantzintla's producers in defending their traditional processing systems. Amid competitive dynamics of the mass market, this annual showcase serves as a strategic tool to highlight the added value of artisanal dairy products. Thus, the municipality not only safeguards age-old dairy transformation techniques but also actively promotes a sustainable rural business model for future generations.
