Romania Expands Dairy Export Market with New Deal in China
Romania's agriculture minister, Florin Barbu, has announced a new memorandum with China, allowing the export of Romanian agri-food products such as dairy and chicken meat. This agreement follows bilateral discussions and marks the first instance of Romanian farmers exporting these products to China. Barbu emphasized the cleanliness of Romanian product labels as a key factor in China's decision.
Beginning next week, more than 30% of Romania's dairy products will be exported to China. These exports represent large orders valued at billions of euros. The minister plans to visit China soon to further discuss the potential for exporting pork and cereals, which are notable Romanian exports.
In 2024, China was Romania's second-largest non-EU trading partner after Turkey, with trade volumes reaching nearly USD 9.3 billion. Despite this, trade between the two countries remains imbalanced, with Romania experiencing a USD 7.7 billion trade deficit with China in 2024 and a USD 2.1 billion deficit in the first quarter of 2025.
