Revised Slurry Lagoon Plans Approved Amid Mine Shaft Concerns

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park authority has approved revised plans for a slurry lagoon near New House Farm, after concerns were raised about the original location due to the presence of mine workings. The initial proposal was altered when the Coal Authority objected to the location because of a recorded mine shaft. The lagoon has now been repositioned approximately 150 meters away from the original site.

The amended plans were submitted by Owen Thomas, represented by Preseli Planning Ltd. The proposed lagoon, measuring 60 by 48 meters, aims to enhance the slurry and dirty water storage capacity for the farm's dairy operation, which includes 250 milking cows. The farm currently has insufficient storage facilities to meet the five-month storage requirement mandated by the control of Agricultural Pollution (Wales) Regulations 2021.

The farm's existing storage capacity of 1,178 cubic meters falls short of the needed 5,481 cubic meters, creating a deficit of 4,303 cubic meters. The proposed lagoon seeks to address this shortfall and offer environmental benefits by allowing nutrients to be spread during favorable weather conditions, reducing the risk of pollution.

The local community council of Jeffreyston raised no objections to the plans but noted concerns about the lagoon's size. They emphasized the need for appropriate mitigation measures to be implemented. The officer's report that recommended approval stated that the development was functionally linked to the agricultural enterprise and necessary to improve slurry management and reduce pollution risks.

Approval was granted with conditions to ensure compliance with environmental standards and to minimize any potential negative impact on the surrounding area.
