Rajasthan’s Historic Leap: First Sex-Sorted Semen Lab
Rajasthan, a significant player in India's dairy sector, is set to undergo a transformative change with the launch of its inaugural sex-sorted semen lab in Bassi. This new facility, equipped with state-of-the-art machines from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), aims to enhance animal husbandry by significantly boosting female calf birth rates to over 90%. This initiative is expected to increase milk production, thus boosting farmers’ economic prospects. The lab will provide over 25 lakh doses of sex-sorted semen annually, offered at 75% less than imported alternatives. Such affordability is anticipated to broaden access to advanced breeding technologies across the region, empowering farmers to genetically enhance their herds.

Rajasthan's dairy sector currently contributes approximately 10% to the state’s GDP. By leveraging this new technology, Rajasthan aims to solidify its position as India's second-largest milk producer, with hopes of ascending to the top rank. Moreover, by prioritizing the birth of female calves, the initiative seeks to address the surplus male calf issue prevalent in rural areas, reflecting a focus on efficiency and economic sustainability in dairy farming. This pivotal development arises from a collaboration between the NDDB and Rajasthan Co-operative Dairy Federation, underscoring the benefits of strategic investments in technology for rural empowerment and development across the state's agribusiness sector.
