Pune Leads Maharashtra in Food Safety Complaints After Portal Launch

Pune has emerged as the leading district in Maharashtra for complaints about unhygienic food practices, according to data from the state’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This follows the launch of a new online grievance portal, which recorded 10 lakh hits within its first 24 hours. The data was presented by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe at a food safety conference hosted by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA).

Portal Engagement and Complaints

The portal, complaints.mahafda.in, has seen significant public engagement, with the majority of filings originating from Pune. These complaints highlight unsanitary practices in commercial food establishments. The digital system is designed to improve transparency and regulatory enforcement, mandating regional FDA Joint Commissioners to address complaints within 24 hours.

Regulatory Actions and Inspections

This initiative is part of a broader enforcement campaign led by Mundhe, who became FDA chief in May. The campaign includes unannounced inspections of high-risk dining establishments such as luxury hotels and street vendors. Notable enforcement actions have already taken place, including the suspension of the Parsi Dairy Farm’s operating license and the closure of the KEM Hospital's kitchen in Mumbai.

Long-term Structural Changes

The FDA is pushing for all food business operators to adopt certified Food Safety Management Systems, adhering to comprehensive regulations set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The agency is also considering the use of blockchain technology to create an unalterable record of violations and actions.

The surge in digital complaints underscores consumer concerns about urban food safety standards and reflects increased public confidence in the FDA's new transparency tools. The administration aims to transform the food safety culture in Maharashtra, encouraging businesses to invest in clean-label supply chains and modern kitchen infrastructure.
