Profeco's 2026 Yogurt Study Highlights Leading Brands in Mexico
In early 2026, Mexico's Procuraduría Federal del Consumidor (Profeco) conducted a comprehensive quality study evaluating 18 yogurt products. The study focused on analyzing compliance with the NOM-181-SCFI/SAGARPA-2018 standard, examining protein content, calcium levels, sugar content, and the presence of live microorganisms.
In the category of unsweetened natural yogurt, Bové and Lala were highlighted as top choices. Bové was noted for its high calcium content of 135 mg per 100 grams and its organic profile, while Lala led in protein content, offering 4.3 grams per 100 grams. Both brands met the required levels of acidity and beneficial microorganisms as per the regulation.
However, the study also revealed significant irregularities. Brands such as Vaca Blanca were identified for using vegetable fat instead of butyric fat, which disqualifies them from being labeled as yogurt. Additionally, Flor de Alfalfa did not meet the necessary levels of lactic bacteria to be considered a functional product.
For strawberry-flavored and sweetened products, Lala 100 Deslactosado and Yoplait Doble Cero were noted for their efficiency. Yoplait Doble Cero offered one of the highest calcium contents at 157 mg per 100 grams, but Profeco warned about the presence of non-caloric sweeteners, advising against their consumption by children.
The Profeco study serves as a catalyst for improving the dairy sector in Mexico by rewarding transparency and penalizing adulterated formulas. This encourages manufacturers to invest in better raw materials and controlled fermentation processes, highlighting the importance of maintaining honest nutritional profiles.
