Price Surge of Milk and Yoghurt in Rawalpindi Raises Concerns
The Fresh Milk Association in Rawalpindi has announced a substantial price increase for dairy products. Milk prices have surged to Rs250 per litre, and yoghurt now costs Rs280 per kilogram, marking increases of Rs30 and Rs40, respectively. This adjustment was made official after consultations with dairy farmers, who will receive 70% of the new prices, leaving 30% for shopkeepers.
This price adjustment contrasts with the official rate of milk previously set at Rs190 per litre, now up by Rs60. Despite the hikes, local authorities have remained silent, drawing criticism from citizens who already face a scarcity of milk in the city. Many residents have expressed concerns about the quality and chemical content of milk available in the market.
The rate change was confirmed by Malik Waqar, the association's President, and Chaudhry Khalid, the General Secretary, who indicated it was a necessary measure agreed upon with the farmers. Meanwhile, citizens have called on the Food Authority, Health Department, and District Administration to ensure adequate milk supply.
Published by Dawn on May 2, 2026, the report highlights ongoing challenges in the dairy market of Pakistan, particularly in Rawalpindi, amid fluctuating supply and demand dynamics.
