Portugal has reported an outbreak of bluetongue disease on a sheep farm, according to the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), as cited by Reuters. The outbreak, detected in the town of Torre dos Coelheiros, is linked to a new variant of the virus, BTV3, which has been circulating in Europe since late 2022.
Bluetongue disease poses a significant threat to domestic ruminants, including sheep, cattle, and goats. In this case, 15 sheep out of a flock of 157 were affected, with one reported death. The emergence of the BTV3 variant has prompted vaccination campaigns in several European countries, including France, to control the spread of the disease.
The resurgence of bluetongue in Europe, particularly the new BTV3 strain, underscores the importance of ongoing monitoring and preventive measures to safeguard livestock health. As countries continue to face outbreaks, the need for rapid response and vaccination efforts remains critical to limiting the disease's impact on agriculture and trade.
