Plantopia Innovates Dairy Production with Molecular Farming
Israeli foodtech startup Plantopia has successfully closed a $9 million funding round to expand its innovative plant-based molecular farming platform. The company, founded in 2018 and based on research from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, aims to produce dairy proteins identical to cow's milk casein without using livestock. This technological advancement will enable the production of high-functionality dairy analogs such as meltable mozzarella and cultured cheeses that are free from lactose and cholesterol.
The key breakthrough achieved by Plantopia is the expression of all four major cow casein subtypes—alpha-s1, alpha-s2, beta, and kappa—within plant tissue. These caseins are vital for the coagulation, emulsification, and melting properties of dairy products, which standard plant-based substitutes often fail to replicate. By engineering plants to carry the genetic instructions for these proteins, Plantopia creates a complete casein complex that forms natural micelle structures.
Unlike precision fermentation startups that depend on large bioreactors and energy-intensive infrastructure, Plantopia's approach involves indoor vertical farming of engineered sprouts. This method significantly reduces capital expenditure and operational scaling costs, as it relies on controlled agricultural setups rather than costly bioprocessing facilities.
The recent investment round was supported by leading Israeli venture capital funds and strategic partners focusing on sustainable agriculture. The acquired funds will be allocated towards optimizing protein extraction efficiency, expanding pilot processing facilities, and advancing regulatory filings in key markets, including the United States and Israel.
This milestone marks a broader shift in the global alternative protein sector towards molecular farming, which is seen as a cost-effective alternative to fermentation. By utilizing plant biology as natural protein factories, Plantopia aims to provide commercial dairy processors with functional, scalable, and environmentally friendly ingredients to meet the increasing consumer demand for animal-free dairy products.
