Piracanjuba's Strategic Acquisitions Aim to Lead Brazil's Dairy Sector

Piracanjuba has placed acquisitions at the core of its growth strategy, aiming to enhance its presence in Brazil's dairy industry. Within the last twelve months, the company has completed three significant acquisitions in the cheese sector. According to Luiz Claudio Lorenzo, CEO of Piracanjuba, these moves are part of a strategy that combines both organic and inorganic growth to solidify the company's market presence.

One of the company's strategic priorities is to expand its milk sourcing in key regions. The Northeast of Brazil has been identified as a particularly promising area, with a growth rate of 30% annually, significantly outpacing the national average of 8%. In this context, Piracanjuba acquired Natulat in Sergipe, marking its first factory in the Northeast. A year later, it incorporated Sertão Laticínio in Alagoas, with the facility expected to process 80,000 liters of milk per day by the end of this year.

The expansion strategy also involves diversifying its product portfolio. In January, Piracanjuba acquired Basel Lácteos, a Minas Gerais-based company known for premium cheeses like Emmental, Gouda, and Gruyere. This acquisition adds to their product offerings and allows the production of other dairy derivatives such as butter and cream cheese.

Piracanjuba's approach aligns with a broader trend of mergers and acquisitions within the dairy sector, particularly in cheese. The company anticipates that the market will continue to consolidate, with the top five groups expected to control more than half of the Brazilian market in the coming years. "Our strategy is to be among the major consolidators in the country," Lorenzo stated.

In addition to cheese, Piracanjuba is aiming to expand its presence in less prominent segments like infant food, pharmaceutical nutrition, and dietary supplements. This expansion was bolstered by the acquisition of the Emana brand in 2024, followed by a R$ 600 million investment to increase whey protein production at its drying tower in Paraná, the second largest in the country.

The company's goal is to transform whey protein into a key growth driver. "We aim to become a significant producer of this protein," Lorenzo remarked. Piracanjuba targets R$ 13 billion in sales this year, representing a projected growth of 8.5%. The company's strategy rests on three pillars: expanding milk sourcing in strategic regions, strengthening its presence in higher-value products, and using acquisitions to scale up in an increasingly concentrated market.
