Pembrokeshire Dairy Farm Enhances Milk Yield with New Technologies
The Ffynnonbrodyr farm, located on the outskirts of Clynderwen in Pembrokeshire, is undergoing significant upgrades to enhance milk production. A new 50-point rotary milking parlour is being constructed, which is expected to reduce daily milking times significantly compared to the existing 10-aside herringbone system.
The farm, managed by William Davies and his parents, Rhys and Mary, has successfully increased the annual milk yield per cow from 9,000 litres to 10,700 litres, with butterfat content at 4.4% and protein at 3.6%. This achievement is attributed to advancements in genomics, breeding, and improved herd management and nutrition.
William Davies aims to further increase production to 900kg of milk solids annually through strategic enhancements, including introducing stronger heifers and optimizing rearing protocols from calf stage to first calving. Additionally, improvements in feed quality through multi-cut silaging and upgrades to the ensiling clamp are planned, allowing for boosted production without expanding the herd size.
The farm operates a Holstein Friesian herd of 350 cows, with approximately 300 cows in milk at any given time. The family cultivates 700 acres, growing crops such as maize and winter wheat, which form the basis of the Total Mixed Ration (TMR) fed to the cows.
In recognition of his efforts, William Davies was awarded the 2024 NFU Cymru/NFU Mutual Dairy Stockperson of the Year Award. He attributes this success to the hard work and influence of his parents, who have been integral to the farm's development.
