Pakistan Government Engages Dairy Farmers for Sectoral Growth Strategies
The federal government of Pakistan has taken a significant step towards boosting its dairy sector by inviting the Corporate Dairy Farmers Association to submit detailed proposals on various aspects including taxation, financing, and exports. This initiative aims to address the sector's development in upcoming policy and budget discussions.
During a recent meeting with Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan, representatives from the Corporate Dairy Farmers Association highlighted the ongoing transformation within Pakistan’s corporate dairy industry. The discussion underscored advancements such as modern breeding techniques, artificial insemination, and scientific herd management. Furthermore, the introduction of advanced milk handling systems has enabled the production of high-quality milk meeting international standards, facilitating the export of value-added dairy products like cheese and processed goods.
The association emphasized the sector's contributions to import substitution, employment generation, and the enhancement of veterinary and technical expertise in Pakistan. These developments are supported by the integration of modern equipment, imported genetics, and international best practices from countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, and Europe.
Minister Jam Kamal Khan recognized the immense untapped potential of Pakistan’s dairy and livestock sectors, advocating for the necessity of long-term financing models and investment-friendly policies to foster large-scale growth. He noted that improved financing mechanisms could significantly enhance the sector's productivity, value addition, and export capabilities.
The minister also pointed out the importance of improved implementation and enforcement mechanisms, as opposed to mere policy formulation, to strengthen formal economic activities and create a more conducive business environment. He stressed the significance of government-private sector collaboration in unlocking further opportunities for exports and sustainable agricultural growth.
Additionally, the meeting explored diversification opportunities into camel milk farming and other livestock-related industries, given the natural suitability of several Pakistani regions for such ventures. The government reiterated its commitment to supporting the dairy and livestock sectors through policy facilitation and investment promotion.
The association was encouraged to detail its proposals on taxation, financing, exports, vaccines, and sectoral development, which will be reviewed in upcoming consultations with relevant ministries and stakeholders.
