Over 77,000 Families Produce Milk in Bolivia
Bolivia’s dairy sector plays a crucial role in the livelihoods of many families. According to the latest figures revealed by Minister Zenón Mamani, more than 77,477 families are involved in milk production, with over 22,000 considering it their primary economic activity. The government's ambitious goal is to double the nation’s milk production through the proposed "Leche para Crecer" law.

The distribution of these dairy-producing families spans across various regions, with La Paz hosting the largest share at 29,457 families. Santa Cruz follows with 23,082 families, while Cochabamba is home to 12,270 families engaged in this activity.

Other regions such as Oruro, Beni, and Tarija also have significant numbers contributing to the industry. In 2024, Bolivia's dairy production reached an impressive 562 million liters, surpassing the previous year’s 529.6 million liters.

Of this production, 60% was delivered to industries, while the remaining 40% was consumed by producers or sold directly. The "Fondo Productivo Lácteo" initiative, inspired by the defunct Fondo Pro Leche, aims to bolster the milk production chain through technical support and financial resources. However, some industry sectors express concerns about potential impacts on legal security within the sector.

The future of Bolivia's dairy industry looks promising, but it will require careful navigation of these challenges to ensure sustainable growth and security for all stakeholders.
