Organic Dairy Farmers 'Optimistic' About the Sector

The NFU food business unit recently conducted visits to organic dairy farms in Shropshire and Devon. The focus was on understanding the challenges and opportunities faced by organic producers. Cara Rhodes, an NFU food business adviser, shared insights from these visits.
Mark Wycherley, a seventh-generation farmer in Shifnal, Shropshire, showcased advancements like robotic milking, which improved animal welfare. His farm, avoiding antibiotics for over a decade, caters primarily to the US cheese market despite challenges like a TB outbreak in 2023.
In Chulmleigh, Devon, Adam Westaway emphasized operational adjustments, such as opting out of robotic milking in favor of more traditional methods due to cost-effectiveness issues. He continues to innovate with herbal leys despite sourcing difficulties.
Meanwhile, Toby Ansdell in Devon focuses on grazing and organic forage production. He acclimatized to a Jersey-cross breed for better hoof health and maintains a positive outlook amidst sector challenges, with strong export potentials.
The overall sentiment among these organic dairy farmers is one of realism mixed with optimism, buoyed by stable market prices and high export demand.
