Nuevo Amanecer Cooperative Seeks Financial Stability Amidst Major Debt
The Nuevo Amanecer dairy cooperative, based in Argentina, is facing a critical financial situation, with daily milk production reduced to just 15,000 liters, far below the 80,000 liters required to cover operational costs. This production shortfall, coupled with a substantial inherited debt of $600 million, has prompted the formation of a multisectoral working group to aid in the cooperative's financial recovery.
The working group includes representatives from the Government of the Province of Buenos Aires, the National Government, the National Institute of Associativism and Social Economy (Inaes), and stakeholders from the Mar y Sierras Dairy Basin. One of the main objectives is to rebuild trust with raw material suppliers, who are owed approximately $300 million. Lorena Sarrini, the cooperative's new leader, emphasizes the importance of restoring relationships with primary producers to restart the production chain and begin settling financial obligations.
The cooperative's financial difficulties have also led to a reduction in its workforce, dropping from 117 to 79 employees in recent months due to decreased revenue. Additionally, the Tandil plant was temporarily closed due to unpaid gas bills, highlighting the severity of the operational challenges faced.
Nuevo Amanecer is actively seeking capital infusion to break the cycle of low production and accumulated debts, aiming to ensure the survival of this critical regional industry and support the remaining productive units committed to the cooperative's future.
