New Dairy Cattle Code Raises Animal-Care Standards in New Zealand

Minister Nicola Grigg has released a revised Dairy Cattle Code of Welfare, marking the first major update to New Zealand’s rules for dairy cattle care in more than ten years. The review considered scientific research, practical experience on farms and submissions from the sector.

The revised code is intended to provide standards that can be applied across New Zealand’s different farming systems. It will take effect on 19 April 2027, giving farmers time to prepare for the requirements before they become operative.

DairyNZ said that most farmers are already working in line with the updated code. The organisation also said that the revision would require changes to some on-farm practices, including the way calves are reared during their first two weeks of life.

Jenny Jago, DairyNZ’s Science Partnerships and Impact Advisor, said the organisation had focused during the review on recognising farmers’ commitment to animal welfare and supporting established good practice. She said DairyNZ had consistently supported strong welfare standards because they were important to New Zealand’s standing as a supplier of milk described as premium, sustainable and ethically produced.

“Farmers take great pride in caring for their livestock, and our focus now is supporting them with clear information and practical tools to put the new requirements into practice,” Ms Jago said.

DairyNZ will work with the Ministry for Primary Industries, other sector organisations and rural professionals before the code comes into force. The work will include guidance and resources for farmers, as well as time to make any required changes. DairyNZ is also providing material on calf rearing, care and good practice.
