Nestlé México launches practical nutrition-label guide

Nestlé México has begun a practical nutrition-orientation initiative focused on how consumers read labels on pre-packaged foods and beverages. The company said the guide is intended to clarify information about serving sizes, energy contribution and ingredients in a market governed by detailed labelling rules.

The method was prepared by the company’s nutrition specialists. It distinguishes between the recommended serving size and the full contents of a package, a distinction that affects how the figures in a nutrition table are interpreted.

The guidance also covers Mexico’s Nutrient Reference Values, or VNRs, for macronutrients and micronutrients. Examples cited include protein, calcium, iron and vitamins. Consumers are instructed to compare the listed amounts with the relevant reference values when assessing a product’s nutritional information.

Another part of the guide concerns the ingredients list. Ingredients are presented in descending order by concentration, and the initiative advises consumers to examine that sequence when reviewing a product’s composition. The material is designed to supplement, rather than replace, the warning symbols used on the front of packages.

Mexico’s front-of-pack warning system was established under NOM-051. Nestlé’s initiative places those warnings alongside information from the full nutrition table, including serving details and nutrient content, for processed foods and dairy products.

The guide accompanies the company’s continuing portfolio-reformulation programmes. According to the source, those programmes include efforts to reduce sodium, added sugars and saturated fats, as well as to increase fortification with nutrients considered critical for the population.

Nestlé México presented the initiative as an educational link between health regulation, food science and everyday household use. The source said the guidance is intended to support informed purchasing and help consumers assess portions in relation to the different life stages and energy needs of household members. The report was published on August 19, 2026, and identified El Universal as its source.
