This collaboration focuses on advancing precision fermentation technology to produce proteins equivalent to those found in the human body. Helaina utilizes genetically programmed microorganisms to create proteins with greater consistency and scalability compared to previous methods that relied on limited sources or structurally different proteins from other species.

The main product from Helaina, known as Effera, is a structurally identical version of human lactoferrin, a protein associated with iron metabolism, intestinal health, and immune system function. Nestlé's interest in bioactive components of human milk is not new, as the company has a history of researching human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). However, this partnership provides early access to a technology that could be applied to a broader range of food, beverage, and supplement categories in the coming years.
