Nestlé Advocates for Hydration in Athletic and Agricultural Settings

Nestlé Mexico, a key player in the food industry and raw material procurement, is emphasizing the importance of hydration in both athletic performance and everyday health. The focus is on the significant impact that a mere 2% loss in body weight due to sweating can have on cognitive and physical abilities. This condition forces the heart to work harder to maintain oxygenation, affecting body temperature regulation and accelerating fatigue.

Ana Villarreal, Nestlé Mexico's Manager of Wellness and Nutrition, highlighted the necessity of incorporating critical minerals, particularly sodium, into hydration practices. She noted that simply drinking water is insufficient for activities lasting over 60 minutes, as it fails to replace lost electrolytes, increasing the risk of cramps, severe exhaustion, or hyponatremia.

Nestlé has proposed a three-phase protocol to mitigate performance losses: pre-hydration, regular fluid intake during exercise, and post-exercise recovery to restore fluid and sodium balance. This approach is akin to routines used in livestock management to ensure efficiency under heat stress.

Through these scientifically backed guidelines, Nestlé aims to influence consumption trends towards nutritionally dense foods and solutions. This initiative is particularly valuable for primary sector stakeholders and dairy producers, as it emphasizes the significance of pure dietary components and the processing of inputs.

Ensuring the transfer of this technical knowledge is crucial for enhancing social well-being and food sovereignty in climates with high demands.
