MMPA and IDFA Host Senator Elissa Slotkin at Ovid Dairy Facility
The Michigan Milk Producers Association (MMPA) and the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) brought Senator Elissa Slotkin, a US senator, to MMPA’s dairy-processing site in Ovid, Michigan. The programme combined an operational inspection with a roundtable attended by cooperative officials, processors and dairy farmers from the region.
The tour focused on MMPA’s expanded ultrafiltered-milk facility in Clinton County. Its membrane-filtration system concentrates milk proteins and lowers the amount of lactose and sugars. The expansion adds approximately 3m pounds of daily processing capacity. The output is intended for products including high-protein yoghurt, ready-to-drink nutritional shakes and other functional beverages.
Participants identified passage of a comprehensive bipartisan Farm Bill as a leading federal priority. They called for the continuation of risk-management arrangements for dairy farmers, including the Dairy Margin Coverage programme. The group also discussed federal milk-pricing and marketing rules, with attention to production costs and the value of milk components used by modern processors.
Trade was another subject at the meeting. Dairy representatives discussed enforcement under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement and efforts to develop overseas markets for American dairy ingredients. Processing executives said access to export markets affects the management of regional milk supplies and the revenues received by farms in the domestic market.
The roundtable also covered labour shortages in agriculture and potential federal changes to workforce policy. Environmental measures were discussed in the context of voluntary conservation programmes led by farmers. The participants included cooperative and association leaders as well as producers and processing executives.
MMPA and IDFA leaders praised Slotkin’s engagement with dairy stakeholders at the facility. The organisations said the meeting addressed the dairy industry’s contribution to Michigan and the wider Midwest, together with continuing investment in processing capacity and the policy issues raised by the sector.
