Mexico Assesses First Leche para el Bienestar Collection Centre in Morelos

The proposed facility would serve small and medium-sized dairy farmers in southern Morelos by connecting them to the public milk-collection network. Officials are reviewing its installation in Tehuixtla, a community in the municipality of Jojutla.

Planned daily intake is between 20,000 and 30,000 litres. Supply would come from farms in Jojutla, Tlaquiltenango, Tlaltizapán, Amacuzac and Puente de Ixtla. The project is also intended to provide a formal sales channel for the local dairy basin.

Milk delivered to the centre would qualify for a guaranteed price of 11.50 pesos per litre. The proposal addresses commercial intermediation and transport constraints identified in the area’s dairy trade.

From Tehuixtla, the milk would be transported in refrigerated tanker systems to the nearest Liconsa industrial plant, located in Tlaxcala. It would then be processed, dried or fortified for the federal government’s social-supply programmes.

Víctor Hugo Pérez Rojas, national director of Operations at Leche para el Bienestar, and Margarita María Galeana Torres, head of SEDAGRO Morelos, led technical meetings on the proposal. The discussions included an assessment of available land and the project’s operational feasibility.

The initiative also includes government support for genetic improvement and dairy-herd development. These programmes are intended to help local herds reach the minimum volumes required for continuous operation. The proposal forms part of a national plan to add 32 collection points by 2030 and would join the existing network of public milk-collection centres.
