Mazatlán Dairy Farmers Secure Price Increase Amid Rising Costs

The Local Livestock Association of Mazatlán has successfully negotiated an increase in the price of raw milk to 11 pesos per liter. This adjustment comes as a response to the rising costs of inputs and inflation that have threatened the viability of dairy farming in the area. Producers in Mazatlán, Sinaloa, have struggled with maintaining profitability, and this price hike is aimed at alleviating some of the financial pressures they face.

Historically, dairy farmers in Mazatlán have sold milk at prices below 10 pesos per liter, a level that has become unsustainable due to increased costs for feed and other essential inputs. The Association played a critical role in advocating for this price adjustment, emphasizing the need for a price that accurately reflects the costs of producing high-quality raw milk.

José Ángel Tostado, president of the Association, highlighted the importance of this increase, stating that it helps producers manage operational expenses, including high costs of balanced feed, energy, and herd management. Analysts in the dairy economy view this as an indicator of the significant disruptions in the value chain, where production costs frequently surpass sale prices.

This price increase is not only a financial relief for farmers but also an opportunity to invest in animal health, farm technology, and milk quality improvements. These investments could benefit the processing industry by ensuring a stable supply of superior raw materials. However, long-term support policies are needed to maintain this momentum and enhance the sector's competitiveness.
