Mato Grosso do Sul's Dairy Industry Operates Below Capacity
The dairy industry in Mato Grosso do Sul is currently operating at less than half of its potential capacity. This issue was highlighted during a recent event discussing strategies to enhance the sector's productivity and efficiency. A collaborative project involving the state government, the Legislative Assembly, and producer associations is underway to improve the effectiveness of actions in the field.
Launched in April 2025, the ProLeite initiative seeks to tackle historical bottlenecks and boost competitiveness in the state's dairy chain. The program features a multifaceted approach, emphasizing associations, technical assistance, genetic improvements, and industrial support. As a key part of its strategy, ProLeite facilitated the formation of the Associação Sul-Mato-Grossense dos Produtores de Leite (Assuleite-MS) in 2025, which already connects producers across 53 municipalities through 57 associations and cooperatives.
In genetic enhancements, ProLeite has secured a partnership with Senar/MS for a R$ 4.3 million agreement aimed at extending actions until 2026. This initiative includes 2,000 fixed-time artificial inseminations, 1,200 embryo transfers, and the distribution of 427 livestock, including heifers, young cows, and bulls. The Technical and Managerial Assistance (ATeG) program oversees the execution of these actions, offering property monitoring and reproductive diagnostics.
ProLeite's progress is set to be a focal point at the upcoming IV Seminário Estadual do Leite, organized by the Legislative Assembly. The seminar, themed “The Future of Milk in MS: Productivity, Health, and the Impact of New Eating Habits,” will emphasize the importance of not only increasing production but also ensuring supply stability and adaptability within the dairy chain.
