Mapped: California Holds the Most Cattle Feedlots in the U.S.
A groundbreaking study has for the first time mapped the extensive network of cattle and hog feeding operations across the United States. Published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment, the research highlights that California hosts more cattle feedlots than any other state, with over 8,700 operations covering more than 85,000 acres. Tulare County alone has 304 operations, leading all counties nationally in feedlot numbers. Conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan and UC Santa Barbara, this project drew on more than two years of data analysis, combining existing datasets with satellite imagery to profile feedlot locations comprehensively. This effort resulted in identifying a collective impact area of over 658,500 acres for these operations. This revelation has sparked significant debate among stakeholders in the agribusiness sector.

The study associates increased numbers of feedlots with deteriorations in air and water quality, while also indicating socio-economic challenges in communities hosting such operations. Notably, it pointed out that over 50% of dairy workers may be undocumented, often facing economic hardships. Anja Raudabaugh, CEO of Western United Dairies, has challenged the study's claims, arguing for consideration of other local pollution sources and emphasizing the industry's economic contributions. This conversation unfolds against a backdrop of recent regulatory changes, leaving animal feeding operations exempt from specific pollution reporting requirements. The implications go beyond California, offering a critical tool for shaping future policies at both state and federal levels, focusing on balancing economic benefits with environmental sustainability.
