Maharashtra's 'Silk and Milk' Model Aims to Boost Farm Incomes

The 'Silk and Milk' model, championed by Maharashtra Minister Meghna Bordikar, seeks to enhance farm incomes in the Parbhani district by integrating sericulture with dairy farming. This dual approach is designed to mitigate agricultural risks and support rural women.

Operated under the joint framework of the Parbhani District Sericulture Development Office and the State Bank of India, the initiative offers farmers institutional loans between ₹7 lakh and ₹8 lakh. These funds are used to purchase dairy livestock and establish mulberry cultivation alongside rearing sheds.

The model's operational synergy is a significant advantage. Mulberry plants, which require minimal water, flourish in dryland soils and produce biomass that can serve as cattle feed. Simultaneously, dairy manure acts as an organic fertilizer for mulberry plots, thus creating a sustainable farm ecosystem that reduces dependency on costly chemical inputs.

Additionally, the 'Silk and Milk' framework is pivotal for rural women's empowerment under the Lakhpati Didi initiative in Maharashtra. Given that sericulture and daily animal husbandry heavily involve female labor, direct banking arrangements ensure that revenues from milk and silk sales are deposited directly into women's bank accounts, thereby enhancing their financial independence and decision-making roles within households.

Bordikar underscores the potential of this model to transform subsistence farming into commercial enterprises across Maharashtra's rain-fed areas. The initiative is supported by government subsidies, technical training from agricultural universities, and accessible bank credit, offering a scalable solution for stabilizing farmgate cash flow and promoting sustainable rural development.
