Maharashtra raises milk prices by Rs 2 per litre from August 11

Milk prices in Maharashtra have been increased by Rs 2 per litre for both cow and buffalo milk. The new rates will apply from August 11, following a decision by the Milk Producers and Processors Welfare Association.

The Maharashtra increase follows changes in Andhra Pradesh, including Vijayawada. Cooperative dairies and private dairy companies have revised their prices in the state, with the latest increases affecting household spending on milk.

Vijaya Dairy, which is operated by the Krishna District Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union, will raise its price by Rs 2 per litre from August 10. Its full-cream milk will cost Rs 80 per litre, up from Rs 78.

Several dairy companies, including Vijaya Dairy and private-sector producers, have raised milk prices twice in the past four months. The repeated revisions have prompted concern among consumers, especially families that buy milk as a daily essential.

Consumer organisations and Left parties have questioned the frequency of the price changes and called for steps to keep milk affordable. On Saturday, the CPM held a protest and demonstration outside a Vijaya Dairy sales point at Lenin Centre in Vijayawada. Protesters, including women and children, raised slogans against the increase and demanded that the revised rates be withdrawn.
