Ludhiana Dairy Waste Poses Pollution Crisis

The ongoing pollution crisis in Ludhiana has escalated as untreated cow dung and dairy effluent from the Tajpur Road dairy complex have clogged local waterways, creating an environmental emergency. Despite the installation of a ₹9 crore Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) and more than ₹3 crore in fines imposed on the facility, the overflow into Buddha Nullah continues to be a major issue. Farmers have protested against the stringent discharge policies, as uncontrolled waste disposal worsens.

In response, municipal authorities have intensified efforts, instituting permanent onsite oversight and deploying mesh screens for waste separation. Private firms have been tasked with managing waste removal. The Buddha Dariya Action Front, spearheaded by activist Anita Sharma, has identified untreated waste discharge from the ETP and illicit dumping by dairy units as chief polluters.

Community initiatives led by MP Balbir Singh Seechewal are making strides in cleaning operations, including removing silt and advocating for biogas solutions, with preliminary improvements noted in water quality. However, persistent waste dumping and blocked infrastructures, particularly ahead of the monsoon, remain persistent risks. Authorities urge the adoption of cooperative models and centralized dung collection systems to bolster environmental resilience.
