Llanilar Farmer Wins Sustainable Agriculture Award for Innovative Practices

Peter Loxdale, a dairy and livestock farmer from Llanilar, has been awarded the NFU Cymru/Wynnstay Sustainable Agriculture Award. The accolade was presented at the NFU Cymru/Wynnstay Sustainable Farming Conference, recognizing his dedication to sustainable farming practices at Castle Hill Farm.

Castle Hill Farm, managed by Peter and his wife Megan since 2021, was originally a sheep-based organic enterprise. The couple converted it into a dairy farm, focusing on environmental sustainability. The farm comprises approximately 150 acres of woodland, with numerous fields now functioning as wildflower meadows to support diverse flora and fauna.

Key to their sustainability efforts is the enhancement of soil health. This is achieved through the use of herbal leys and deep-rooting grasses, which have been effective in alleviating soil compaction. Additionally, a small reservoir has been installed on the farm to collect rainwater, reducing dependence on mains water.

NFU Cymru Rural Affairs Board Chair Gary Yeomans highlighted the couple's courageous decision to re-enter the dairy industry in 2021, a period when the milk market faced challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He commended their ability to secure the necessary finances during such uncertain times.

Upon receiving the award, Peter expressed his gratitude, stating, "I am humbled and honoured to have received this award. We are very fortunate to farm in such an idyllic part of the world and seeing the wildlife doing so well is a highlight of each day.”

The award includes a Welsh slate barometer and a £500 prize, further acknowledging Peter's contributions to sustainable agriculture.
