Lawmakers Urge FDA to Enforce Dairy Labeling Standards
Led by Senator Tammy Baldwin from Wisconsin, a coalition of lawmakers has called on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to enforce federal standards of identity more strictly. The group seeks to prevent plant-based beverages from being labeled with terms traditionally associated with dairy products such as 'milk,' 'yogurt,' 'cheese,' and 'butter.'
Supporting this initiative are key figures such as Senator Jim Risch of Idaho and Representatives John Joyce of Pennsylvania and Josh Riley of New York. Their collective effort aims to end what they describe as regulatory leniency toward non-dairy alternatives made from plants, nuts, seeds, or algae.
The lawmakers addressed a letter to FDA Acting Commissioner Kyle Dimantas, expressing concerns about public health and consumer confusion. They argue that allowing plant-based products to use dairy terminology misleads consumers into believing these products have comparable nutritional value to traditional dairy.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, many plant-based substitutes lack the essential nutrients found in cow's milk, with fortified soy being an exception. The legislative push aligns with Senator Baldwin's DAIRY PRIDE Act, which would require the FDA to take action against misbranded food products under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
The coalition urges the current administration to overturn previous FDA draft guidance that was more permissive. The National Milk Producers Federation, American Farm Bureau Federation, and EDGE Dairy Farmer Cooperative have all shown support for the initiative. These organizations stress the importance of maintaining label integrity to protect the economic interests of American dairy farmers and ensure the nutritional health of consumers.
This action reflects growing commercial competition between traditional animal dairy products and plant-based alternatives, highlighting the need for clear labeling to safeguard both industry standards and consumer understanding.
