Lactalis Restructures Operations in Uruguay, Sparks Labor Concerns

In a significant move within Uruguay's dairy sector, French multinational Lactalis has announced a strategic restructuring following its acquisition of Granja Pocha, a move that could impact the company's operations, particularly in Cardona. The news, revealed last Monday, suggests a shift in Lactalis's production focus, likely affecting employment in the region.

The Acquisition and Its Implications

Lactalis's acquisition of Granja Pocha has stirred unease among workers. Pablo Sesini, a representative from the Sindicato de Obreros de Granja Pocha (Sograp), expressed concern over the lack of detailed information regarding the acquisition and its implications. Sesini noted the precarious nature of the dairy market, highlighting that Lactalis's history of abrupt investments and exits adds to the anxiety.

Impact on the Cardona Plant

The restructuring plan could result in a substantial reduction at the Cardona plant, with potential job losses being a point of contention. Union representatives have criticized Lactalis's decision to consolidate UHT milk production in Juan Lacaze, suggesting it leaves a void in Cardona. Delegates indicate that despite assurances, previous restructurings by Lactalis, such as in Salto, have led to closures.

Negotiations and Future Steps

Amid these developments, union leaders are engaging in negotiations with the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS) to avert job losses. This includes discussions of relocating affected workers to other Lactalis facilities. The situation remains dynamic, with further talks scheduled to ensure minimal disruption to the workforce.
