Dundee-based Kerr's Dairy, with a rich heritage spanning over 120 years, has successfully expanded its customer base by 5,000 through strategic agreements with competitors in the milk delivery sector, thecourier.co.uk writes.
Last month, Kerr's acquired the database of 780 Aberdeen customers from Muller Wiseman, and more recently, it concluded a deal to take over over 4,000 Aberdeen clients from Thomson Dairies.
Capitalizing on the surge in demand for doorstep delivery services during the Covid lockdowns, Kerr's aggressively expanded its home delivery offerings. Following substantial success in Tayside, the company ventured into Aberdeen in June 2020.
Director Kelvin Kerr expressed eagerness to continue growing the business, even considering additional opportunities. The recent acquisitions follow Kerr's takeover of North Street Dairy in Forfar a year ago.
With a workforce of 80 and a fleet of 60 vans across its Dundee and Aberdeen locations, Kerr's now serves a total of 25,000 customers. Notably, around 14,000 of these customers are now serviced from Aberdeen, surpassing the company's customer count in its hometown.
Kelvin Kerr remarked, "The fact we now have more customers in Aberdeen than Dundee is really quite astonishing. I would never have believed that a few years ago. What’s really important to us is delivering a quality, reliable service to our customers."
As part of the deal with Thomson Dairies, 15 staff members have transitioned to Kerr's, contributing to the company's expansion efforts. The undisclosed transaction does not include Thomson's depot at East Tullos Industrial Estate, leaving room for Kerr's to explore further growth opportunities.
Kelvin Kerr stated, "I’m delighted to get the deal over the line which gives us a real foothold in Aberdeen. We are still expanding in the area, and it’s important to me that we create more local jobs, as well as making sure that people keep their jobs. We will certainly look at other opportunities as they come along."
Muller Wiseman closed its milk processing facilities in 2016 and its Aberdeen depot in 2019 but retained its doorstep delivery customers. Thomson Dairies, with its main headquarters in Shotts and a Perth location, remains active in the dairy industry.
