Kenya Dairy Sector Set for Transformation with MoreMiLK Initiative
Kenya’s informal dairy sector, which accounts for about three-quarters of the country’s milk supply, is set to undergo a major transformation with the launch of the MoreMiLK initiative. This project is aimed at improving milk safety and access, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
This four-year project targets small-scale dairy businesses in Nakuru, Nyandarua, and Uasin Gishu counties. It aims to improve milk safety, quality and ensure access to regulated markets through capacity development and a certification scheme. The initiative seeks to support the gradual transition of these enterprises into certified ones that offer safe and quality dairy products.
According to a press statement seen by TUKO.co.ke, the MoreMiLK initiative aims to address current challenges by improving milk handling practices and ensuring regulatory compliance. This will empower vendors to thrive and enhance consumer trust while playing a critical role in the nation’s economy and nutrition.
Dr. Joshua Chepchieng, Secretary Administration State Department of Livestock Development, highlighted the long-term vision of formalizing Kenya's dairy sector to provide safe milk while contributing to nutrition security, health, and economic growth. The project supports Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, prioritizing dairy development.
This project encourages consumers to buy from trusted businesses, empowers informal dairy operators, and aligns with Kenya's economic goals. Margaret Kibogy, Managing Director of the Kenya Dairy Board, expressed commitment to uplifting the entire dairy sector through capacity building and resource access.
The MoreMiLK initiative is poised to deliver significant improvements in milk safety standards and regulatory compliance, creating a sustainable model enhancing livelihoods and driving national food security.
