JICA has committed to a grant aimed at increasing productivity in Sri Lanka’s dairy sector with a focus on improving cattle genetics, disease response, and feed production.

On September 30, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) finalized a grant agreement in Tokyo with the Government of Sri Lanka. The event was witnessed by President Anura Kumara Disanayaka of Sri Lanka and JICA President Tanaka Akihiko. The grant, aimed at enhancing productivity in the dairy sector, will provide a maximum of 463 million Japanese Yen.
Targeting regions including the Kandy district and several provinces, the project aims to boost raw milk productivity through improved livestock disease response, genetic enhancement of dairy cattle, and better feed production. The execution of this project falls under the Department of Animal Production and Health within Sri Lanka's Ministry of Agriculture. Planned over 36 months, the initiative aims to cultivate economic growth by supporting small-scale dairy farmers, aligning with SDGs such as Zero Hunger (Goal 2) and Climate Action (Goal 13).
