Ireland's Organic Milk Prices Rank Second Highest in the EU
According to the latest report from the EU Milk Market Observatory, Ireland ranks second in the EU for organic milk prices, with a rate of 72.5 cents per liter. This price represents a nearly 30 cents per liter premium over conventional milk prices, making organic dairy farming an attractive option for many Irish dairy farmers.
The high price of organic milk has removed a significant barrier for farmers who previously hesitated to convert to organic practices due to the lack of premium pricing. With the current premium available, more conventional dairy farmers are now evaluating the potential benefits of transitioning to organic milk production.
In response to growing interest, the Teagasc organic team has organized a series of organic dairy farm walks across Ireland. These events aim to provide farmers with firsthand insights into organic dairy farming, including the potential for profitability and reduced dependence on purchased inputs.
Last winter, organic milk prices in Ireland reached up to 90 cents per liter, with strong market demand expected to persist. This scenario presents an opportunity for farmers to improve profitability while reducing stock numbers and input costs.
The scheduled farm walks are set to take place in Waterford, Clare, and Wicklow in early July. These events will cover various topics such as stocking rates, grazing management, veterinary requirements, and the organic certification process. Farmers will also have the chance to hear from peers who have successfully transitioned to organic farming.
The initiative targets dairy farmers considering organic conversion, those interested in reducing input costs, and those aiming to improve environmental sustainability. With limited places available, interested parties are encouraged to register promptly.
