Innovative Sensor to Combat Calf Pneumonia Launched in the UK

A newly developed sensor, Pneumonitor, is offering dairy farmers an advanced method to prevent pneumonia in calves by tracking pen conditions systematically. Created by developers Isaac Orr and Clyne Albertelli, the sensor captures data on temperature, humidity, air pressure, and other critical factors directly at calf height. Early alerts are sent to smartphones when conditions indicate potential risks, allowing farmers to intervene before illness manifests.

Rather than relying on traditional checks that respond only after symptoms appear, Pneumonitor provides proactive solutions. The project has been supported by the Digital Dairy Chain Innovation Voucher Scheme, which is part of a £21m initiative led by Scotland's Rural College. This program aims to enhance productivity and sustainability within the UK dairy sector by bridging research, industry, and technology.

Pneumonia is a significant economic burden for farmers, costing millions due to reduced yields and long-term health impacts. Pauline Murray, director of the Digital Dairy Chain, emphasized the transformative potential of the project and its considerable benefits for veterinarians, who can now manage multiple farms remotely.

The scheme has aided over 67 projects, unlocking investments exceeding £1.3 million. With a new funding round offering up to £100,000, further innovation in the dairy sector is on the horizon.
