Influenza A(H5N1) Affects Dairy Cattle in Mexico: Safety Measures in Place

The National Institute for Forestry, Agriculture, and Livestock Research (INIFAP) has officially reported the detection of avian influenza A(H5N1) in dairy cattle across several regions in Mexico. The announcement emphasized that pasteurized milk remains safe for consumption due to the effectiveness of pasteurization in inactivating the virus.

Mexican authorities have implemented strict biosecurity protocols and epidemiological surveillance to contain the virus's spread and protect public health. The INIFAP statement highlighted the importance of transparency in maintaining consumer confidence in the dairy sector.

Despite the identification of the virus in dairy cattle, INIFAP reassures that the thermal process of pasteurization effectively eliminates any risk of transmission through properly processed dairy products. This measure is crucial to prevent market panic and ensure the continuity of the dairy supply chain.

Affected dairy cows have shown symptoms such as a significant drop in milk production, fever, and changes in udder consistency. Farms with confirmed cases are under quarantine and strict veterinary supervision to limit the economic impact on the livestock sector and prevent the spread to other animal species.

INIFAP advises against the consumption of raw or unpasteurized milk and stresses the importance of farm personnel adhering to recommended hygiene practices, including the use of personal protective equipment. Training and biosecurity in dairy farming are now more critical than ever to protect both livestock and the occupational health of workers.
