Himachal Pradesh Advances Dairy Sector with New Dhagwar Milk Plant
Himachal Pradesh is making significant strides in dairy modernization with the construction of the Dhagwar Milk Plant in the Kangra region. Announced as the state's most advanced dairy facility by Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Minister Chandra Kumar, the plant represents a ₹225-crore investment. Currently, 41% of the project is completed, and once operational, it will handle up to 100,000 litres of milk per day.
The Dhagwar Milk Plant is designed to feature state-of-the-art automated systems and advanced processing technologies aimed at enhancing both efficiency and product quality. A key focus of the facility is product diversification, with plans to produce milk, curd, paneer, khoya, mozzarella cheese, lassi, and flavored milk. This strategic shift aims to move the state's dairy sector from simple raw milk sales to the production of value-added products that offer higher market potential.
Minister Kumar emphasized the economic benefits of the project, highlighting that it will increase farmer incomes through procurement prices set at ₹50 per litre for cow milk and ₹61 per litre for buffalo milk. Additionally, the plant is expected to create rural employment opportunities and bolster local economies.
The Dhagwar Milk Plant is part of a broader transformation within India's dairy sector, incorporating technology and efficiency to empower producers and create value. If the project is completed on schedule, it could serve as a model for sustainable and inclusive dairy growth, especially in India's hill states.
