HHS and FDA Commend Efforts to Eliminate Artificial Colors from U.S. Food Products

On July 22, 2025, the leadership of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) praised the Consumer Brands Association for pledging to eliminate certified Food, Drug & Cosmetic (FD&C) petroleum-based colors from the American food supply. Supported by the Trump Administration, this initiative encourages member companies to cease using FD&C colors by December 31, 2027.
President Trump, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary have emphasized the prioritization of removing artificial colors. This initiative is seen as another step in the joint efforts of the Trump Administration and the food industry to rapidly improve nutrition across the nation.
According to Secretary Kennedy, America is embarking on a new era of nutrition by substituting synthetic food dyes with natural colors. Commissioner Makary also noted that the FDA approved four new natural color additives during this period, marking significant progress in their mission. This voluntary commitment from the Consumer Brands Association further includes the elimination of specific FD&C colors from school foods by the 2026-2027 school year.
