Gujarat Authorities Detain Man Over Suspected Adulterated Milk

The Porbandar Local Crime Branch detained Sarman Kodiyatar after receiving information about the alleged preparation and storage of adulterated milk at a residence in Timbinesh village. The property is within the jurisdiction of the Kutiyana police station and is located near Jay Mataji Milk Dairy.

LCB officers searched the residence following the tip-off and found approximately 30 litres of milk suspected of being adulterated. The operation also produced materials that officials believe may have been used in preparing the product.

Materials seized and samples collected

The seized items included about 75kg of skimmed milk powder. They comprised two unopened 25kg sacks and two other bags that were partly filled. Officers also took 14 tins of palmolein, as well as additional materials linked to the alleged preparation process.

After the discovery, the crime branch notified local food-safety authorities. A food-safety officer attended the site and took samples of the suspected milk for laboratory analysis. The rest of the milk was destroyed at the location after the samples had been secured.

Laboratory testing is intended to establish the composition of the seized milk and the nature and extent of any adulteration. Investigators are also examining why the milk powder, palmolein and other substances were held at the residence, including whether they were intended for making products for commercial sale and whether any such product had reached the market.

Proceedings under food-safety law

Police have begun legal proceedings against Kodiyatar under India’s Food Safety and Standards Act. Further measures will depend on the results of the food-safety inquiry and the laboratory examination.
