Valio's VP of Innovation highlights how GLP-1 drugs are altering consumer interest towards protein quality, benefiting the dairy sector. As appetite is suppressed, consumers prioritize high-quality protein, boosting demand for dairy. Flavour enhancement remains crucial for consumer satisfaction.
GLP-1 Drugs Influence Dairy Consumption by Shifting Focus to Protein Quality

The rise of GLP-1 medications is changing consumer behaviors, particularly in relation to protein intake. Dr. Kevin Deegan, Vice President for Innovation at Finland-based dairy company Valio, addressed this shift at the Arena Dairy Innovation Strategies conference in Amsterdam on March 25. He noted that these drugs suppress appetite, prompting users to focus more on the quality rather than the quantity of protein consumed.

Dairy products, recognized for their high-quality protein, stand to gain from this trend. Dr. Deegan emphasized that dairy proteins are perceived as natural and of superior quality by consumers, making them an attractive choice as users become more selective about their protein sources. He further highlighted that dairy products are not only nutritious but also accessible and appealing in taste.

Moreover, the conference panel, which included Mike Bagshaw from International Taste Solutions, discussed the importance of flavour. As GLP-1 users have reduced appetites, the taste becomes a critical factor. Bagshaw pointed out that flavour suppliers play a significant role in masking and enhancing the taste of nutrient-dense products, ensuring they remain appealing to consumers.

However, research from Cornell University suggests that once GLP-1 usage stops, some consumers revert to previous dietary habits, increasing their consumption of less healthy foods. This indicates a potential challenge for sustained changes in dietary behavior.

Dr. Deegan also mentioned that while GLP-1 medications are primarily used for diabetes and obesity and are currently administered by injection, the development of pill formats could increase their accessibility and voluntary usage. Nonetheless, he questioned the sustainability of behavioral changes driven by these medications, noting that the food industry is responding to rather than driving these changes.
