Global Dairy Market: Oceania's Production Recovery Faces Cost Challenges

The latest report from Fedeleche, utilizing USDA data, presents varied developments in the global dairy market. According to Dairy Australia, March 2026 saw a 2.8% increase in production compared to the previous year. However, the overall season of 2025/2026 still lags with a 0.7% decline. The region is grappling with elevated costs, notably a 110% increase in urea prices and a 94% hike in maritime transport costs, as per the Baltic Dry Index.

In Europe, the dairy sector shows signs of stabilization. Some UK cooperatives have begun increasing May prices as a response to global cues, though caution remains prevalent. Germany is experiencing a rise in livestock inventory, attributed to strategic operational adjustments rather than increased profitability.

South America presents a mixed picture. Argentina and Uruguay have seen production growth, yet international pricing trends are unfavorable. Argentina's dairy herd is growing, while Uruguay's cow numbers continue to fall. In contrast, Brazil and Chile recorded price increases in the first quarter of 2026, maintaining a distinct internal market dynamic.
