Girolando Cattle Breed Drives Brazilian Dairy Production Growth

The Girolando cattle breed has cemented its position as a pivotal element in Brazil's dairy sector, with productivity nearly doubling over the last twenty years. According to data revealed at the Megaleite event, the average milk production per animal has surged from approximately 4,000 kg annually two decades ago to nearly 8,000 kg today.

This remarkable growth in productivity is primarily supported by family-run farms. During the event, it was reported that about 60.7% of Brazilian dairy farmers produce up to 200 liters of milk daily, while 29.4% produce between 200 and 1,000 liters. Combined, these groups account for nearly 90% of the country's dairy farmers and contribute to over 70% of national milk production.

The Girolando breed's success is attributed to its adaptability to diverse production systems and climatic conditions across Brazil. The breed's flexibility allows it to thrive in various regions, promoting widespread dissemination throughout the country.

At the Megaleite event, a new contract was signed between the Girolando Association and Embrapa Dairy Cattle focusing on gene editing. This initiative aims to expedite the identification and multiplication of strategic traits such as tick resistance, heat tolerance, the presence of the short hair gene, and polled characteristics.

The event also highlighted the relationship between productive efficiency and sustainability. The Girolando Genetic Improvement Program's data indicates that the genetic gains linked to increased production have been accompanied by a 40% reduction in methane emissions per kilogram of milk produced.

By integrating advances in productivity, adaptability, environmental efficiency, and genetic improvement tools, the Girolando breed continues to play a crucial role in Brazil's dairy farming, enhancing the sector's competitiveness.
