Fonterra Expands Cooperative Model in Southeast Asia

Fonterra, the New Zealand-based dairy cooperative, has established a significant presence in Southeast Asia, with its operations in Malaysia playing a pivotal role. The International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) recently highlighted Fonterra's Malaysian processing hub as a prime example of cooperative growth and value addition in the region.

Since opening its Susumas processing plant in 1992, Fonterra has continuously invested in the modernization and expansion of its facilities in Malaysia. This strategic location serves as a transit hub where approximately 50% of Fonterra's New Zealand milk exports are re-processed, blended, and packaged for distribution across Southeast Asia.

Fonterra's Malaysian hub is not only a center for physical dairy manufacturing but also hosts the cooperative's Global Business Services Asia. This facility provides crucial operational, financial, and administrative support to Fonterra’s activities throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

Employing hundreds of local staff, the center supports over 20,000 retail outlets in Malaysia. This demonstrates the cooperative's ability to integrate into local economies and build modern multinational service infrastructures that extend their reach beyond domestic borders.
