Fonterra Supports New Two-Year Dairy Vocational Training Program in New Zealand

Fonterra, in collaboration with Growing Future Farmers (GFF), has formalized a strategic partnership to introduce a new two-year vocational training program. This initiative is designed to support young individuals entering the dairy industry, providing them with practical experience and NZQA qualifications.

The pilot program is set to begin in early 2026 in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions of New Zealand. It is based on a farmer-led vocational training model, combining essential academic learning with intensive practical, on-farm experience.

Students will be mentored by Fonterra farmer trainers and will work towards achieving a recognized NZQA qualification. Anne Douglas, Fonterra group director of farm source, highlighted the partnership's role in introducing young people to the cooperative's diverse opportunities.

The program is modeled after the successful training program for the sheep and beef sector by GFF. Wendy Paul, CEO of GFF, emphasized the program's strengths, including practical experience, academic learning, and pastoral support.

This structured training aims to address critical long-term industry challenges, such as succession planning and resource allocation for future farms. Jo Johnstone, a Fonterra farmer and GFF trustee, stated that the farmer trainers are investing in the next generation of farm owners and industry leaders.
