Fonterra Director Bids Farewell After 8 Years

Andy Macfarlane, a pivotal figure in New Zealand’s dairy industry, is stepping down from his role as a farmer-elected director of the Fonterra board—a position he has held for eight years. His departure, announced to coincide with Fonterra’s annual meeting later this year, has stirred the cooperative's governance and set the stage for new elections.

During his tenure at Fonterra, Macfarlane has contributed significantly to the cooperative's strategic direction and governance. His roles included chairing the co-operative relations committee and serving on several others, such as the audit, finance & risk, people, culture and safety committees. The departure leaves two board vacancies due to both Macfarlane and Alison Watters retiring, although Watters plans to seek re-election.

The upcoming election is pivotal for Fonterra shareholders who must decide on two new directors. An independent panel will shortlist candidates to ensure only the most qualified individuals are elected by Fonterra's farmers.

Peter McBride, Fonterra’s chairman, praised Macfarlane for his substantial contributions and enduring legacy, noting his invaluable expertise in supporting the company’s future positioning. Despite retiring from the board, Macfarlane will continue representing Fonterra on the Global Dairy Platform.
