Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced a comprehensive initiative to increase milk and dairy production in India, acknowledging the country's status as the largest milk producer globally.

Despite this achievement, Sitharaman highlighted the need to address low productivity in the sector.

In the fiscal year 2022-23, India's milk production saw a notable 4% increase, reaching a total of 230.58 million tonnes. To further strengthen the dairy industry, Sitharaman outlined plans to develop strategic measures aimed at achieving self-reliance (Atma Nirbharta) in oilseeds production.

The finance minister emphasized a commitment to enhancing value addition in the agriculture sector and increasing farmers' income.

India's milk production rose 4 per cent to 230.58 million tonnes in 2022-23.
