Better Dairy has announced that its precision-fermented lactopontin has achieved Self-Affirmed GRAS status in the United States. This means that an independent panel of qualified experts reviewed the dossier submitted by the company and unanimously concluded that the ingredient is safe under its intended conditions of use. It is a self-affirmed GRAS determination, not FDA approval.
Better Dairy Obtains an Independent Safety Determination for Lactopontin in the United States

Lactopontin is a protein found in human and bovine milk. According to Better Dairy, its use as a separate ingredient in food products and supplements has previously been limited by the lack of an available supply. The company has developed a way to produce it through precision fermentation and says it is ready to supply the ingredient to manufacturers in the United States.

The safety dossier included information on lactopontin’s composition, manufacturing process, purity, specifications and safety studies. Better Dairy is working with customers to launch the first products containing the ingredient in the coming months.

The company is considering lactopontin for products targeting healthy aging, gut health, immunity, joint and skin health, and recovery after physical activity. The press release identifies these as potential areas of application; it does not provide clinical data on the effectiveness of finished products. The company is also exploring combinations of lactopontin with collagen, lactoferrin and probiotics.

Better Dairy is separately pursuing regulatory pathways in Europe and Asia, as well as the potential use of the ingredient in early-life nutrition products in the United States. The current Self-Affirmed GRAS determination does not cover that product category.
