FDA Approves Gardenia Blue Color Additive Encouraging Phase-Out of FD&C Red No. 3

On July 14, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of gardenia (genipin) blue as a food color additive, derived from the fruit of gardenia, marking the fourth natural color source approved in the past two months. This decision aligns with the "Make America Healthy Again" initiative by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, led by Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., aiming to eliminate synthetic petroleum-based dyes from food.

Approximately 40% of the food industry has committed to phasing out such synthetic dyes. Secretary Kennedy emphasized the importance of prioritizing children's health by eliminating unnecessary chemicals in foods. FDA Commissioner Marty Makary highlighted the significance of expanding naturally sourced color options to facilitate the transition away from synthetic dyes.

The FDA encourages an accelerated phase-out of FD&C Red No. 3 before the 2027 deadline. Gardenia blue will be used in products such as sports drinks, fruit drinks, teas, and candies. This move follows previously approved natural colors like galdieria extract blue and butterfly pea flower extract in May. The FDA stresses the need for safe color additives under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

In addition, Consumer Brands announced a commitment to removing certified artificial colors from school products by the 2026-2027 school year, supporting the FDA's initiative. The FDA continues to uphold its mandate to ensure food safety, security, and public health protection.
