Fatal E. Coli Outbreak Linked to Lancashire Cheese in the UK

A person in Scotland died after consuming Mrs Kirkham's Lancashire cheese contaminated with Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC).

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued an urgent recall for four types of the cheese produced in Preston. The recall is a precautionary measure as the cheese may be contaminated with the pathogenic STEC, known for causing food poisoning.
At least 30 reported cases are linked to the "specific outbreak strain" found in the cheese. Symptoms of STEC infection include severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, and the potential development of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to kidney failure and be fatal. The FSA advises consumers to follow the product recall notices and take necessary precautions.
